jack tatum (bass, guitar,
synthesizer and drums) started wild nothing as a solo project in his blacksburg,
virginia home studio in 2009. before that, he played in the bands jack and the
whale and facepaint. his shinny, synthesizer heavy music first gained the
blogosphere’s attention upon the release of his version of
kate bush's "cloudbusting." according to his label, wild nothing’s “carefully orchestrated synth-pop arrangements, trebly guitar riffs and tattered drum machines blend together to create an intriguing, texturally rich glo-pop album that could come only from the young at heart.” in late 2009, jeff haley (bass), nathan goodman (guitar), and max brooks (drums) joined him as touring musicians for a tour he shared with neon indian. “jack has crafted together a really cool sound, made up from pop influenced guitar and synths, with a layer of ambient sound effects and topped off with the aforementioned nostalgic element,” wrote bernt olav thorsheim. “it all works really well together, and it creates a wonderful layered sound.” gemini, the band’s debut lp was released may 25, 2010. “gemini finds jack constructing a striking, solitary monument to just about anyone who moped, sulked, or bedsat their way through the 1980s, wrote ian cohen. “his love of dreamy, fuzzy, handcrafted guitar-pop isn't far removed from the radio dept. or the pains of being pure at heart, but he displays a more comprehensive and widespread commitment to classic indie-pop sounds.” don't forget, the album cover image always links to sample songs and the band's image to their website. check here to see if wild nothing have any gigs scheduled near you. as always, please buy this album from your local independent music store by people who know and love music and not from retailers like wal-mart (soulless, globally-homogenizing, community-killers) or i-tunes (albums should be listened to as an entire composition with album cover and liner notes in hand). incidentally, these two companies sell more music than any other retailer in the united states. that my friend, bites. wild nothing are really something. if you agree, please spread the word (about the band and this site). don't worry if you missed the foals profile from last week: here it is.
