portland based the helio sequence was formed in 1999 by brandon summers (vocals, guitar) and benjamin weikel (keyboard and drums) who also played with modest mouse. their albums are recorded in their home studio which result in an atypical amount of experimental freedom allowing a more layered sound. their most recent album, keep your eyes ahead, was released by sub pop records on january 28, 2008. as reflected in the seamlessly tracked album, the duo's ambient musical style has matured and evolved, due in part to the vocal cord damage brandon suffered during previous years of touring. the damage was so extensive in fact, that he had to undergo therapy and do extensive vocal exercises in order to relearn to sing. mission accomplished. click here to listen to an in-studio interview/set recorded by wxpn for world café on august 12, 2008. click here to watch an in studio set/interview recorded by kcrw's morning becomes eclectic from october 14, 2004. click here to listen to an in-studio interview/set recorded by kexp on april 22, 2008. don't forget, the album cover image always links to sample songs and the band's image to their website. currently, the helio sequence aren't really touring. check back here to keep up to date of their touring schedule. as always, please buy this album from your local independent music store and not from retailers like wal-mart (soulless, globally-homogenizing, community-killers) or i-tunes (albums should be listened to as an entire composition with album cover and liner notes in hand). incidentally, these two companies sell more music than any other retailer in the united states. that my friend, bites. the helio sequence rocks. if you agree, please spread the word (about the band and this site). don't worry if you missed the dear science review from last week: here it is. |
