mark kozelek, best know through the work of his previous band, red house painters, formed sun kil moon back in 2002 along with red house painters band mate anthony koutsos (drums), and additional members tim mooney and geoff stainfeld (bass).  for what its worth, the band takes it's name from the korean boxer sung-kil moon.

two pieces of trivia: 1.) their debut album, ghosts of the great highway, includes the tracks "salvador sanchez," "pancho villa" and "duk koo kim"; all deceased boxers.  "glenn tipton", track one of the same album references boxers sonny liston and cassius clay.  2.) mark played the character of larry fellows, (stillwater bassist) in cameron crowe's 2000 semi-autobiographical film almost famous.

the group is considered a "slow core" band: focusing on layered guitar textures and intimate ballads.  mark's lyrics are emotionally deep and intensely personal, dealing with loneliness, vulnerable old friends,  and the feelings attached to lost loved ones.  although mark tells beautiful stories through his lyrics, he never intends to write “concept albums”.  he does however, tend to write songs that can stand as epics.  in fact the average track runs around six minutes.

sun kil moon released their third l.p. april, appropriately enough on april 1, 2008.  will oldham and ben gibbard (death cab for cutie) make guest vocal appearances.

as always, please buy this album from your local independent music store by people who know and love music and not from retailers like wal-mart (soulless, globally-homogenizing, community-killers) or i-tunes (albums should be listened to as an entire composition with album cover and liner notes in hand).  incidentally, these two companies sell more music than any other retailer in the united states.  that my friend, bites.
