ok, i know ga ga ga ga ga is not exactly a new release. in fact, it's old, really old (released back in july 2007). but it's good. really good, and the album made spoon huge. not that they weren't huge before, maybe it just made them huge-er. in fact, the merely 33 minute, yet perfectly crafted ga ga ga ga ga debuted at number 10 on the billboard 200. it wasn't always rainbows and prime rib for the band however. they were dropped from elektra four months after the 1998 release of their major label debut a series of sneaks. it was such a "failure" that their a&r rep, ronn laffitte was even fired. the band believed that the label wasn't supportive enough and decided to put their feelings to music. the result was a vindictive two-song concept single entitled "the agony of laffitte" and “laffitte don’t fail me now” in which they question the label’s ethics and lack of support. spoon formed in austin back in 1993 and have since released six l.p.'s. they named themselves after some german band whose song "spoon" was used as the theme song for some german movie. sorry i don't have more info. you may recognize britt daniel (lead singer guitar) and the rest of spoon from the stranger than fiction soundtrack (composed and arranged by britt). they have also provided songs for the o.c., bones, veronica mars and the simpsons. they have appeared on dave, conan, austin city limits and snl. click here to watch an in-studio set/interview or here to listen to a in-studio set/interview recorded by kcrw's morning becomes eclectic on july 18, 2007 and may 13, 2005, respectively. click here to listen to a january 08, 2008 9:30 club gig recorded by all songs considered. click here or here to listen to in-studio interviews/sets recorded by wxpn for world café on january 07, 2008 and july 28, 2005. spoon aren't touring right now. check back here to find out when they add additional dates. as always, please buy this album from your local independent music store by people who know and love music and not from retailers like wal-mart (soulless, globally-homogenizing, community-killers) or i-tunes (albums should be listened to as an entire composition with album cover and liner notes in hand). incidentally, these two companies sell more music than any other retailer in the united states. that my friend, bites. spoon rocks. if you agree, please spread the word (about the band and this site). don't worry if you missed the fate review from last week: here it is. |
