a bunch of people have sent emails requesting that WEDNESDAY review old albums from time to time. if you are one of those retro leaning music fans, today is your lucky day. if not, today is still your lucky day. carnavas by the california band silversun pickups was released almost two years ago, way back in july of 2006! some say silversun pickups have a sound similar to smashing pumpkins. on the surface, i guess i can agree. you can tell however, that they are their own band. they also kind of remind me of the band catherine wheel. the lead singer/guitarist brian aubert might be described as an acquired taste, in part due to his unique tin-ish sounding singing voice and tendency to yell at odd moments. his guitar playing, though heavily distorted is very powerful. in all, although their lyrics are not as meaningful as they could be, the tight instrumentals invite the listener in to search the collective souls of the four band mates. overall, carnavas is a very good album; i could say that if you were to buy it it would be a good "pickup", but that would be cheesy. as always, please buy this album from your local independent music store and not from retailers like wal-mart (soulless, globally-homogenizing, community-killers) or i-tunes (albums should be listened to as an entire composition with album cover and liner notes in hand). silversun pickups rock. if you agree, please spread the word (about the band and this site). don't worry if you missed the in rainbows review from last week: here it is. |
