WEDNESDAY  ARCHIVE  |  PEP SQUAD  MAILING LIST  GEAR  REQUEST LINE  ROCK DOC  CONNECT

twenty-six year old pokey lafarge learned to play his parlor guitar, guitjo (a guitar tuned six string banjo) and kazoo nine years ago. since then pokey lafarge & the south city three (pokey lafarge: vocals, guitar, guitjo, harmonica, and kazoo; adam "boss hoss" hoskins: guitar, vocals; joey glynn: upright bass, vocals; ryan "churchmouse" koenig: washboard, harmonica, vocals) have been creating folksy boxcar riding, bluegrass that robert johnson would have gladly claimed as his own.

pokey's lyrics are more than words strung together that form sentences.  “writing is the same as thinking, for me,” pokey said.  in fact, much of pokey’s truly american music incorporates regional history.  “my songs are mostly about me; i guess you could say i’m self-involved.”

pokey wrote on his website that his "influence is deeply rooted in the heroes and misfits of yesterday; the long lost troubadours of country, the kings of swamp-drenched ragtime, and all the legendary bluesmen of the cotton kingdom. the result is a boiling pot of american cultures; a wonderfully fresh and quirky kind of pop music that combines delta-meets-appalachia song-writing with a big, big beat."

"old-time acoustic music is part of what defines this country," pokey says.  "you can feel the people of america in it, there's an identity to the music.  it's connected to something real."

pokey lafarge & the south city three's third l.p., riverboat soul will surface in early 2010.

click here for a few live songs from daytrotter.  click here for a bunch downloadable mp3's.  click here for their youtube page.  click here for a few songs off of riverboat soul.  don't forget, the album cover image always links to sample songs and the band's image to their website.

check here to see if mew have any gigs scheduled near you.

as always, please buy this album from your local independent music store by people who know and love music and not from retailers like wal-mart (soulless, globally-homogenizing, community-killers) or i-tunes (albums should be listened to as an entire composition with album cover and liner notes in hand).  incidentally, these two companies sell more music than any other retailer in the united states.  that my friend, bites.

pokey lafarge & the south city three flow like the mississippi river.

if you agree, please spread the word (about the band and this site).
