after his goth band the birthday party split in 1983, australian baritone rocker nick cave formed his current band, the bad seeds. their music, written by cave, consistently focuses around topics such as love, religion, death, and his obsession: american music. his lyrically gloomy, yet high energy sound is best described as a combination of rock, blues, gospel, and post-punk. the late 1980's and early 1990's proved to be very productive for cave and the band. in 1989 he performed in and contributed a total of four songs to wim winder's classic film, wings of desire and the sequel, far away, so close! in addition he contributed songs to batman forever, dumb and dumber (a surprisingly decent soundtrack), shrek 2, and most recently, the great film the assassination of jesse james by the coward robert ford. cave released the books king ink, in 1988, and and the ass saw the angel in 1989. he appeared in the films ghosts...of the civil dead in 1989 and the 1991 brad pitt film johnny suede. interestingly, at fellow aussie russell crow's request, he wrote a rejected sequel to the film gladiator. also in the early 1990's, as an audience member of late night with conan o'brien, i saw him perform (on same night mr. miyagi was on the show!). word. dig, lazarus, dig!!!, cave's 14th studio album dropped april 8, 2008 to critical acclaim. in fact, mojo magazine named it the best album of 2008. click here to watch an in studio set/interview recorded by kcrw's morning becomes eclectic from march 31, 2001. click here for an april 28, 2008 fresh air interview. click here to watch a couple of nick cave and the bad seeds videos, once past the intro page, follow the video tab. finally, click here to stream a bunch of bad seeds songs over the world wide inter-web. don't forget, the album cover image always links to sample songs and the band's image to their website. nick cave and the bad seeds have a bunch of u.s. and u.k. dates scheduled. click here to find out if they are playing near you. as always, please buy this album from your local independent music store and not from retailers like wal-mart (soulless, globally-homogenizing, community-killers) or i-tunes (albums should be listened to as an entire composition with album cover and liner notes in hand). incidentally, these two companies sell more music than any other retailer in the united states. that my friend, bites. nick cave and the bad seeds rock. if you agree, please spread the word (about the band and this site). don't worry if you missed the yelle review from last week: here it is. |
