WEDNESDAY  ARCHIVE  |  PEP SQUAD  MAILING LIST  GEAR  REQUEST LINE  ROCK DOC  CONNECT

in 2002, ben goldwasser and andrew vanwyngarden formed the band the management (soon just mgmt, pronounced m-g-m-t) with the creative intention of performing unique pieces of  psychedelic performance art using synthesizers, turntables and backing tapes.  initially, they were not interested in releasing albums or being restricted to a specific catalog of songs.

upon graduating from wesleyan university in 2005, the duo began utilizing live instruments and backing vocals on stage.  also around this time, mgmt began touring in support of the band, of montreal.  in 2006, mgmt signed with columbia records, relocated to brooklyn, and enlisted dave fridmann (flaming lips) to produce their sprawling debut l.p., oracular spectacular, released january 22, 2008.

incidentally, andrew and kevin barnes of of montreal are collaborating on a side project called blikk fang.  expect and album soon.

click here to listen to a march 13, 2008 short mgmt interview/session originally aired on wxpn's world café live.  or, click here to watch the band perform "time to pretend" on the hugely important bbc2 series later with jools holland. (available in the u.s. on the fuse channel).

mgmt is touring primarily along the u.s. east coast and europe.  they are booked through november 2008, but may add additional gigs.  click here to find out if mgmt is coming to your town.

as always, please buy this album from your local independent music store and not from retailers like wal-mart (soulless, globally-homogenizing, community-killers) or i-tunes (albums should be listened to as an entire composition with album cover and liner notes in hand).  incidentally, these two companies sell more music than any other retailer in the united states.  that my friend, bites.

mgmt rocks.

if you agree, please spread the word (about the band and this site).
