let's put something to rest once and for all. as there is no "margot" in margot & the nuclear so and so's, there is some confusion as to where the name came from. the band once said it is after lead singer richard edwards daughter, "margot". that's sounds nice, except he doesn't have a daughter. other's assert "margot" is a girl he met in california. acually, "margot" is named after the gwyneth paltrow character in wes anderson's great film the royal tenenbaums. before margot & the nuclear so and so's, richard was in a band called archer avenue, again, after the royal tenenbaums. in 2004, after meeting at an indianapolis pet store, richard and andy fry (guitar) decided to form the eight piece band. the other six members include friends, siblings and ex-boyfriend/girlfriends. the chamber pop band is usually compared to the arcade fire and the decemberists. on october 07, 2008, margot & the nuclear so & so's released two albums: animal and not animal. interesting story behind that. after recording 25 tracks, the label and the band couldn't agree on track selection. so two versions were released. animal!, the band's preference was released digitally (available via internet) and on vinyl. not animal, epic's preferred version was released on cd. click here to listen to a set recorded april 17, 2006 by minnesota public radio for their show the current. click here to watch video from imeem. don't forget, the album cover image always links to sample songs and the band's image to their website. margot & the nuclear so and so's have a few dates scheduled. click here to see if they are playing near you. as always, please buy this album from your local independent music store and not from retailers like wal-mart (soulless, globally-homogenizing, community-killers) or i-tunes (albums should be listened to as an entire composition with album cover and liner notes in hand). incidentally, these two companies sell more music than any other retailer in the united states. that my friend, bites. margot & the nuclear so and so's rock. if you agree, please spread the word (about the band and this site). don't worry if you missed the keep your eyes ahead review from last week: here it is. |
