saving the world from bad music since last wednesday.

WEDNESDAY  ARCHIVE  |  PEP SQUAD  MAILING LIST  GEAR  REQUEST LINE  ROCK DOC  CONNECT
memphis based lucero have been pounding out great punk-ish, rock-ish, alt-country-ish music since 1998.  the band, whose names translates from spanish to english as "bright star" was formed by ben nichols (guitar and vocals), and is rounded out by roy berry (drums), john c stubblefield (bass), brian venable (guitar), and occasionally rick steff (piano, organ, accordion).

their star is so bright in fact (terrible, clichéd writing) that aaron goldman created a 2005 documentary about the band called dreaming in america (also the name of their 2005 album).  i haven't seen it, but the band describes it as "just us getting drunk and making fun of each other."

ben also co-stars on the mtv series $5 cover, about the memphis music scene.

their lyrics, told through ben's raspy voice describe long nights of boozed mayhem and debauchery.

according to daytrotter's sean moeller, they "tend to give voice to characters who live recklessly, laugh big hearty laughs and do most things, well, heartily. The music that they give to these characters, as accessories and themes, is somewhere in a twilight zone between punk rock and the kind of country and western music that you'd find in a jukejoint or a honky tonk in the middle of nowhere, with a floor littered with broken bottle glass."

their seventh lp, 1372 overton park, surfaced october 2009.  the album clearly strives toward a certain memphis/country/soul sound.  as an aside, the album name comes from the address that the band lived and practiced at for much of the 2000's.  in the 1970s, the building was used as a karate dojo where elvis took lessons.  sadly, the building was recently razed.

click here for a few live songs from daytrotter.  click here for an october 19, 2009 set recorded by wxpn for world café live.  don't forget, the album cover image always links to sample songs and the band's image to their website.

check here to see if lucero have any gigs scheduled near you.  there's a good chance that they do because they play upwards of 200 gigs per year.

as always, please buy this album from your local independent music store by people who know and love music and not from retailers like wal-mart (soulless, globally-homogenizing, community-killers) or i-tunes (albums should be listened to as an entire composition with album cover and liner notes in hand).  incidentally, these two companies sell more music than any other retailer in the united states.  that my friend, bites.

lucero's got that soul that you need.

if you agree, please spread the word (about the band and this site).
