liam finn, son of crowded house's neil finn released his debut album i'll be lightning way back on august 6, 2007. yes, that's a long time ago, but the album is so good, it needed to be reviewed. better late than never. the album peaked at #13 on the billboard heatseeker chart. at the age of 19, liam got his start in the band betchadupa, ultimately releasing two albums: 2002's the alphabetchadupa, and aiming for your head in 2004. liam was born in melbourne, grew up in new zealand and currently resides in london. he recorded his debut album in unpolished analog (giving it a diy demo quality sound) at his father's aukland recording studio. he recorded all of the instrumentals himself, and recreates this solo atmosphere during live gigs by looping with an effects pedal as he moves from instrument to instrument. in 2007 he toured with crowded house and in 2008, opened for eddie vetter and the black keys. click here to watch an in-studio set/interview recorded by kcrw's morning becomes eclectic from february 21, 2008. click here to listen to a sxsw gig recorded at volume by wxpn from march 14, 2008. click here for an april 29, 2008 in-studio interview/performance recorded by studio 1b on austin's kut. also, don't forget the album cover image always links to sample songs and the band's image to their website. liam finn has a few dates scheduled. check back here to see when he adds additional dates. as always, please buy this album from your local independent music store by people who know and love music and not from retailers like wal-mart (soulless, globally-homogenizing, community-killers) or i-tunes (albums should be listened to as an entire composition with album cover and liner notes in hand). incidentally, these two companies sell more music than any other retailer in the united states. that my friend, bites. liam finn rocks. if you agree, please spread the word (about the band and this site). don't worry if you missed the into the night review from last week: here it is. |
