in 1993, chernobyl survivor eugene hütz immigrated from the ukraine to the united states. six years later, after connecting with a russian theater director, an israeli guitarist, a 53 year old russian accordion player, an american drummer, an ethiopian bassist and a thai-american and chinese-scottish backing vocalist, gogol bordello was born. the explosive gypsy punk band sprinkling ska, funk, folk, metal, reggae, and flamenco released their fourth l.p., super taranta on july 10, 2007. according to lead singer eugene hütz, "everything on the album is taken to the next level. it's more direct, more abstract, more focused, with more dark humor". you may already be familiar with and eugene hütz and gogol bordello; along with elijah wood, eugene starred in liev schreiber's reflective 2005 film everything is illuminated. in addition, the band (many making cameo appearances in the film) performed some of the music for the soundtrack. click here to listen to a july 18, 2007 gig at the legendary d.c. music venue, the 9:30 club. if you need more gypsy punk, click here for a short interview/set session from npr's all things considered from 2006, or here for an in studio performance from ifc's the henry rollins show. gogol bordello are touring heavily. they are scheduled to appear in columbus, minneapolis, st. petersburg, brooklyn and philadelphia among other cities this month. click here to find out if gogol bordello is coming to your town. as always, please buy this album from your local independent music store and not from retailers like wal-mart (soulless, globally-homogenizing, community-killers) or i-tunes (albums should be listened to as an entire composition with album cover and liner notes in hand). incidentally, these two companies sell more music than any other retailer in the united states. that my friend, bites. gogol bordello rocks. if you agree, please spread the word (about the band and this site). don't worry if you missed the a mad and faithful telling review from last week: here it is. |
