san francisco’s girls are made up of key members christopher owens (vocals) and chet "jr" white (bass/producer). they have been compared to elvis costello, buddy holly, and the beach boys by the new york times. because of their common interest and background in punk music, soon after meeting the duo began recording music in jr's parent's garage. in september 2009 they released their debut album, titled album. growing up a member of the “children of god” cult in amarillo, texas, in an interview with exclaim! magazine, christopher discussed “how being part of the cult informed his childhood and his music. during that time he was not allowed to listen to outside music, but was allowed to watch movies, where he learned about bands like queen and guns n' roses.” pitchfork rated their single "hellhole ratrace" at 383 of the top 500 songs of the 2000s, and rated album as the 10th best album of 2009, receiving a 9.1 rating. their latest ep, broken dreams club released 22 november 2010. according to their label, on broken dreams cub, “we find girls emerging with a more massive, lusher sound with horns, pedal steel and psychedelic effects dappled throughout.” click here for a link to their videos. the album cover image always links to sample songs and the band's image to their website. check here to see if girls have any gigs scheduled near you. as always, please buy this album from your local independent music store by people who know and love music and not from retailers like wal-mart (soulless, globally-homogenizing, community-killers) or i-tunes (albums should be listened to as an entire composition with album cover and liner notes in hand). incidentally, these two companies sell more music than any other retailer in the united states. that my friend, bites. girls are smooth. if you agree, please spread the word (about the band and this site). don't worry if you missed the eux autres profile from last week: here it is.
