feist's newest album released may 2007, was a surprise hit of 2007. in addition to being honored with four 2008 grammy nominations, the reminder ended up on more 2007 top 5 list's than i can count (npr readers voted her album #3, paste magazine #5, etc.) i think she owes some of her success to two facts: the fact that her introspective folkie style of pop music is totally infectious, and the fact that her song "1234" was featured in a major apple ipod nano ad campaign airing in mid-september of 2007. technically, the calgary winter olympic games opening ceremonies provided toronto's leslie feist with her first public performance; sure she was 12 and performed with 999 other 12 year olds, but come on, it's the olympics. her first actual public performance took place in 1993 when she won the opportunity to open for the ramones. this event proved doubly important because on that day she met brendan canning and kevin drew, founders of the great band broken social scene. ten years later she joined their band and toured with them for a few albums. after leaving bss, she sang back up for her friend, electro-punk queen, peaches. click here to to watch a 2007 feist set recorded for morning becomes eclectic, on l.a.'s legendary kcrw. if that's not enough, click here or here to listen to a pair of interviews/studio sessions recorded for wxpn and world café live on december 28, 2007 and june 25, 2005 respectively. if you like feist's gentle, sweet sound, go see her live! she is currently on an extensive tour. click here to find out when feist is coming to your town. as always, please buy this album from your local independent music store and not from retailers like wal-mart (soulless, globally-homogenizing, community-killers) or i-tunes (albums should be listened to as an entire composition with album cover and liner notes in hand). incidentally, these two companies sell more music than any other retailer in the united states. that my friend, bites. feist rocks. if you agree, please spread the word (about the band and this site). don't worry if you missed the icky thump review from last week: here it is. |
