saving the world from bad music since last wednesday.

WEDNESDAY  ARCHIVE  |  PEP SQUAD  MAILING LIST  GEAR  REQUEST LINE  ROCK DOC  CONNECT
dirty projectors are led by former yale student, current “musical director” and one of the most unique/eccentric indie singer/songwriters of the early 2000’s, dave longstreth.  he is accompanied by a shifting cast of band members.  in fact, there have been 17 band members in total, but no more than 6 at a time (including ezra koenig and rostam batmanglij of vampire weekend).

dave deconstructs his own music and others' (ie: black flag, more on that later) and reassembles it using his own instrumental work and vocals.

daves’ first album, the graceful fallen mango, was released in 2002 under his own name and recorded in his bedroom on a 4-track machine; he played everything on the album.  in 2003, he released his first album under the name "dirty projectors", an lp called the glad fact.  this album was his first to contain songs about finches and contain explicitly titled songs about cars: both reoccurring themes.

in 2005, dirty projectors released a concept album about musician don henley.  in 2007 the band released rise above, an album inspired by black flag’s album damaged, recorded from dave’s memory.  the idea for the album was born when dave found an empty cassette case previously containing the black flag album.  "i just sort of began writing melodies, and then sort of distinct from the melodies i was making, thinking of the words as well as i could, and then just sort of pairing them as best i could," he said.

their fifth lp, bitte orca, released june 09, 2009 and is so titled because the band liked the sound of it.

check here to see if dirty projectors have any gigs scheduled near you.

as always, please buy this album from your local independent music store by people who know and love music and not from retailers like wal-mart (soulless, globally-homogenizing, community-killers) or i-tunes (albums should be listened to as an entire composition with album cover and liner notes in hand).  incidentally, these two companies sell more music than any other retailer in the united states.  that my friend, bites.

dirty machines rock.

if you agree, please spread the word (about the band and this site).
