although i have never seen the ambient punk/noise rock band deerhunter perform, i hear the atlanta based group's live shows are highly intense, often leaving audiences polarized. karen o of yeah yeah yeahs called one deerhunter performance "a religious experience". vocalist bradford cox occasionally performs wearing sundresses, because he doesn't "like the idea of going around stage in just jeans and a t-shirt. it seems anticlimactic." bradford is a really skinny 6'-4" and has marfan syndrome, a genetic disorder giving him extra long arms and legs. (punk trivia: joey ramone also had marfan syndrome.) additionally bradford says "to achieve harmony in bad taste is the height of elegance". their third l.p. microcastle, more atmospheric and meditative than the first two, released october 28, 2008. click here for a few songs from originally broadcast on npr's all songs considered november 10, 2008. don't forget, the album cover image always links to sample songs and the band's image to their website. deerhunter tour heavily and have quite a few dates scheduled. click here to find out if they are playing near you. as always, please buy this album from your local independent music store by people who know and love music and not from retailers like wal-mart (soulless, globally-homogenizing, community-killers) or i-tunes (albums should be listened to as an entire composition with album cover and liner notes in hand). incidentally, these two companies sell more music than any other retailer in the united states. that my friend, bites. deerhunter rocks. if you agree, please spread the word (about the band and this site). don't worry if you missed the troubador review from last week: here it is. |
