relying on rotating band mates, multi-talented, multi-cultural jannis noya makrigiannis (his family history includes danish, greek and indonesian influence) formed choir of young believers as a solo project in 2006: sometimes the band performs as a duo, sometimes there are seven people on stage (he recently performed with a 50-piece symphony orchestra). “i’ve always been into playing different instrumental lineups,” the ex-member of the danish band lake placid said. “i really like that you can play one song in many different ways and then it expresses different things.” choir of young believers routinely draw comparisons to fleet foxes and patrick watson. although he has created his own unique sound, he admits that he he finds influence in the records of roy orbison, the beach boys, pixies, and hank williams. jannis' low key folk and orchestral pop is "marked by magisterial melodies, dark lyrical concerns, and a healthy dose of cathedral-grade reverb." although we on the north american continent are just becoming aware of his music, the band recently won the "best new act" danish grammy and danish critics choice "hope of the year" awards. on august 18, 2009, choir of young believers released their debut lp, this is for the white in your eyes. the album conjures images of "snow-flecked mountaintops, deserted city streets, ghost-filled churches and a final kiss between estranged lovers" and "paints cinematic tableaux, with jannis cast as the silvery voiced narrator." click here for an october 27, 2009 cmj session recorded at cmj by kexp. click here for october 21, 2009 interview and set recorded by kcrw's morning becomes eclectic. click here for a bunch of youtube videos. check here to see if choir of young believers have any gigs scheduled near you. consider yourself very lucky if they do. as always, please buy this album from your local independent music store by people who know and love music and not from retailers like wal-mart (soulless, globally-homogenizing, community-killers) or i-tunes (albums should be listened to as an entire composition with album cover and liner notes in hand). incidentally, these two companies sell more music than any other retailer in the united states. that my friend, bites. choir of young believers rocks. if you agree, please spread the word (about the band and this site). don't worry if you missed the built to spill profile from last week: here it is. |
