ontario's dan snaith (the artist known as caribou, formerly as manitoba), is an interesting guy with an even more intriguing background. first, in 2005 he earned a phd in mathematics from the imperial college, university of london. the title of his thesis was overconvergent siegel modular symbols. my guess is that he's a pretty smart bird. second, in 2004 dan was forced to change his stage name from manitoba to caribou under threat of lawsuit by "handsome dick" manitoba of the punk band the dictators. if you like the beach boys experimental music, or the beatles later work, you will enjoy caribou's latest album, titled andorra. i would describe it as a hypnotic collection of songs, full of peaks and valleys. in fact, dan has been quoted as saying, "i really like that this album starts out with euphoric sounding pop songs and turns a corner and ends up sounding different from where you expected it." click here for a mini-documentary produced by the bbc. if you like caribou's
hypnotically soothing psychedelic folk-pop, go see him live! he tours
constantly. click
here to find out when caribou is coming to your
town. caribou rocks. if you agree, please spread the word (about the band and this site). don't worry if you missed the cassadaga review from last week: here it is. |
