glasgow's camera obscura originally
formed by tracyanne campbell (vocals), john henderson (percussions), gavin
dunbar (bass), and david skirvinghas (guitars) have been creating "lush,
shimmering chamber pop" with "orchestral flourishes and romantic lyrics" since
back in 1996.
the band released their first lp, biggest, bluest hi-fi, in 2001 to critical acclaim. bbc's john peel named their song "eighties fan" to the top ten of the festive 50 in 2001, the album also charted on several independent music charts. the band worked with kindred spirits and fellow scottish band belle & sebastian on this album as well as on several other projects. they released underachievers please try harder and let's get out of this country in 2003 and 2006, respectively. camera obscura's latest album, my maudlin career, released on april 21, 2009 was described as having an "affectionate wit" and a "melancholy tendency towards life's daily routines and relationships" and expands on the pop elements of their previous albums. click here for an in-studio set recorded by wxpn for world café on june 05, 2006. click here to watch an in-studio set july 19, 2006 interview recorded by kcrw for morning becomes eclectic. click here for "a short film about camera obscura" part one, click here for part two. click here for a few videos. don't forget, the album cover image always links to sample songs and the band's image to their website. check here to see if camera obscura has any gigs scheduled near you. as always, please buy this album from your local independent music store by people who know and love music and not from retailers like wal-mart (soulless, globally-homogenizing, community-killers) or i-tunes (albums should be listened to as an entire composition with album cover and liner notes in hand). incidentally, these two companies sell more music than any other retailer in the united states. that my friend, bites. camera obscura rocks. if you agree, please spread the word (about the band and this site). don't worry if you missed the noble beast review from last week: here it is. |
