boise, idaho group built to spill formed in 1992 by
ex-treepeople singer doug martsch (vocals, guitar) and was supported by brett
netson and ralf youtz. doug's initial intent was to change the lineup for
every album, so in 1993 after the release of the band's debut album (recorded in
the middle of the night so they could take advantage of free studio time), brett
and ralf were replaced with high school band mates brett nelson (same name except
for the one letter switcheroo) on bass and andy capps (same name as the preservative laden
snack except for the apostrophe) on drums, who
tragically died in 2006. eventually doug's idea of working with different musicians proved difficult; his fragmented compositions and song structures became too challenging to re-teach to an ever changing lineup. as a result, their third l.p., and first major label release consisted of doug, brett, brett and scott plouf (drums). eventually jim roth (guitar) joined up with the band finally rounding out the current lineup. the band cites dinosaur jr, neil young, pavement and camper van beethoven as influences and the ataris, modest mouse, the strokes, and death cab for cutie (all now major indie bands) have mentioned built to spill as their influences. in this case the padwan became a master (except for the strokes, they still blow). built to spill's seventh l.p., there is no enemy surfaced october 06, 2009. click here for a set/interview by kcrw's morning becomes eclectic. click here for a bunch of videos and live performances. click here for a bunch more songs. don't forget, the album cover image always links to sample songs and the band's image to their website. check here to see if mew have any gigs scheduled near you. as always, please buy this album from your local independent music store by people who know and love music and not from retailers like wal-mart (soulless, globally-homogenizing, community-killers) or i-tunes (albums should be listened to as an entire composition with album cover and liner notes in hand). incidentally, these two companies sell more music than any other retailer in the united states. that my friend, bites. built to spill rocks. if you agree, please spread the word (about the band and this site). don't worry if you missed the islands profile from last week: here it is. |
