following a common band name trend,
the members of architecture in helsinki are neither architects nor are
they from helinski. in fact, the band only recently visited finland for
the first time. i'm not sure of their interest in architecture in general. anyway, architecture in helsinki reside in melbourne, australia and are one of relatively few current australian bands that have been able to find a following on another continent. in fact, they have toured in the u.s. with death cab for cutie and clap your hands say yeah and opened for david byrne, the polyphonic spree, yo la tengo and belle & sebastian. the band is made up of five idiosyncratic and quirky members playing such diverse instruments as analog synthesizer, glockenspiel, tuba, clarinet, and recorder. they describe their style as "kind of party-time freak rock with touches of soul and hip-hop," but they "have a strong hope that the next record will come out sounding like some kind of black metal and doo-wop crossover…" architecture in helsinki released their third l.p., places like this, july 28, 2007. if you haven't heard the album already, you will really dig its pop infused calypso rhythm. click here to listen to an in studio set/interview recorded by kcrw's morning becomes eclectic from june 20, 2007. click here, here, here, here and here to watch a few architecture in helsinki's videos on youtube. don't forget, the album cover image always links to sample songs and the band's image to their website. architecture in helsinki has a few australian dates scheduled. check here to see if they are coming to your favorite aussie town. as always, please buy this album from your local independent music store by people who know and love music and not from retailers like wal-mart (soulless, globally-homogenizing, community-killers) or i-tunes (albums should be listened to as an entire composition with album cover and liner notes in hand). incidentally, these two companies sell more music than any other retailer in the united states. that my friend, bites. architecture in helsinki rocks. if you agree, please spread the word (about the band and this site). don't worry if you missed the cardinology review from last week: here it is. |
