amanda palmer is best know for her work in the dresden dolls, a band she describes as "brechtian punk-cabaret" after bertolt brecht an early 20th century poet, playwright and theater director. before the dolls, she acted in plays and street theater (occasionally as a living statue in harvard square). in 2000, she met brian viglione and formed the dresden dolls. early shows included life-sized marionettes, coin-operated boys, living statues greeting fans outside the theater and actors performing circus and burlesque pieces on stage during the gig. on september 16, 2008, the ben folds produced who killed amanda palmer? dropped. the title comes from a witty play on the theme of the laura palmer character from the great 1990's television series, twin peaks. her intention in doing the album was "supposed to be simple" and take a week to record. however, as laura said, "it ended up not being simple at all." she said it best, "i first got the idea to put together a really simple, stripped-down, record-in-my-underwear-in-my-apartment-in-boston kinda thing." in fact, it ended up being like her life. one year later, this brilliant, mature solo debut album was released to the world. click here to listen to an in-studio interview/set recorded by wxpn for world café on august 03, 2006. click here to listen to an in studio set/interview recorded by kcrw's morning becomes eclectic from june 24, 2004. click here to listen to an story originally aired on npr's all things considered on january 17, 2007. click here for amanda palmer's videos and here for the dresden dolls videos. don't forget, the album cover image always links to sample songs and the band's image to their website. amanda palmer has tons of dates scheduled for your viewing pleasure. check here to see if she's coming to your town. as always, please buy this album from your local independent music store by people who know and love music and not from retailers like wal-mart (soulless, globally-homogenizing, community-killers) or i-tunes (albums should be listened to as an entire composition with album cover and liner notes in hand). incidentally, these two companies sell more music than any other retailer in the united states. that my friend, bites. amanda palmer and the dresden dolls rock. if you agree, please spread the word (about the band and this site). don't worry if you missed the loyalty to loyalty review from last week: here it is. |
